About The Company

Our History

Golden State Steel and Stair, Inc. was started in January, 1994 by Fred and Joan Baker. Fred Baker worked for B&R Steel for twenty years, where he started in fabricating and then moved to ironworks erection. When B&R Steel closed its business, Fred decided to take his knowledge and experience and start his own. GSSS started with only 4 employees: Fred working both fabricating and erection, Joan running the business end, John Tuttle providing estimating, detailing, field measurement and sales, and Jeff Kersten running the shop part time.

In March of 1995, Golden State Steel and Stair moved to it's current shop location in Richmond, CA. In October, 1995, we bought our first truck. Now, GSSS operates with a fully staffed shop of welders and fabricators, as well as a full staff of ironworkers in the field every day.

Our mission at Golden State Steel & Stair, Inc. is to provide quality work on each and every job, no matter how large or small. We strive to make each and every customer completely satisfied with the work we do for them, from fabricating to erecting.
